Marie will discuss native and non-native hydrangeas varieties that are dependable and very easy to care for. Sun requirements, bloom time, watering and pruning tips will also be discussed. Presenter-Marie Meiklejohn, gardening coach and container designer for over 20 years.

Great Dahlias. This presentation showcases the beauty of dahlias and offers strategies for successful growing. Learn about popular hybrid varieties, forms, and sizes. By the end of the session, you will be able to implement a plan for your own garden, growing stunning dahlias to enjoy in your home or to share with others. Presenter, Terry Fulginiti has been a Penn State Master Gardener since 2001 and has grown dahlias for 25 years. She is the owner of Dahlia Acre, a hobby turned into a small business, that grows and sells specialty cut flowers, both wholesale and retail. Terry is a member of The Greater Philadelphia Dahlia Society, The American Dahlia Society, and the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers. Trry earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. Her diverse nursing career included critical care, emergency nursing and informatics. She has written and edited for several nursing publications, including the Journal of Emergency Nursing. Terry retired from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Composting - Russ Hartman
Composting is essential to building great soil which is essential for good gardening. In addition, home composting offers an excellent way for households to reduce the amount of kitchen and yard waste that goes to landfills. This presentation covers the many benefits of home composting, the various waste materials that can be composted, and basic compost science. In addition, the presenter will discuss how to get started making good compost at home, various uses for the finished product, and ways to troubleshoot issues that may arise. Presenter Russ Hartman has been a Master Gardener since 2021 and is currently a Master Watershed Steward trainee. He began composting in the early mid-1980’s and has used both open and closed-bin systems. During his training year, he led the compost team that developed the composting system at Adams Hollow Community Garden in Bristol Borough. He is currently a mentor for the compost team of 2023 Master Gardener trainees at Snipes Farm and Education Center in Morrisville.
Russ has a Master of Social Work degree from Rutgers University and is retired from a career in Behavioral Healthcare. In addition to his volunteer work as a Master Gardener, he is a member of the board of directors of the Bucks County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

[email protected] Kristi Wenrich is a Penn State University Master Gardener, Montgomery County. She loves to garden. She grows, eats, and preserves every vegetable, herb, and spice she can acquire seeds for in Montgomery County, PA. Her goal is to transform her tiny piece of suburbia from generic lawn into an edible landscape for humans, insects, and birds. Her favorite crop to grow is new gardeners.

Live Staking: Backyard Stream Repair - Jim Walter
Does your property have a stream or pond on it? Are you concerned about how to repair your stream banks? This talk covered methods of stream bank repair and introduces the low cost, highly effective method of Live staking to reestablish a riparian buffer and reduce stream bank erosion.
Jim Walter is a long term Bucks county Master Watershed Steward and Master Gardener. He is a member of the Buckingham Township Environmental Advisory committee. Jim earned a Ph.D. from U.C. Berkley in Chemical Engineering. He worked
in the Agricultural Chemical Industry for many years ending his Career with FMC here in Philadelphia.

This presentation describes the unique characteristics of true bulbs, corms, rhizomes, tubers and tuberous roots, and the methods used to store them over the winter. At the end of this talk, you will have gained an understanding of proper digging, drying and storage procedures to provide successful protection through the winter and beautiful plants next year.
